PUMPKIN : FALL AGAIN!

I have been trying to do the best that I can for my pumpkin vine.
I havewrapped three little pumpkins.
They looked grow so well.

But three days ago I find a fallen fruit again.
The fruit on the center of the picture above finally fell on the ground.

I opened the plastic wrapper.

It looks bigger than the fallen fruits before.

The skin looks good on a side.
But, look... on the other side... rotten!

I took it and split it.
I didn't find fruit flies larva or nothing strange.
I don't know why.

I still have two pumpkins on the vine.
I hope they safe and I can pick them.

  1. I wonder if it had become too wet inside the polythene bag?

    1. There are so many possibilities. We had rainy, windy and sunny days two weeks ago, that the weather changed so fast. Maybe both of wet and hot weather that caused fruit damage.

  2. I'd agree with Sue's assessment of the damage. It's always a shame to lose fruit when it's almost ready. Hopefully your remaining fruit will flourish - perhaps you could net it with string mesh for support but let the air at it?

    1. Net it, sound so interesting! I should try this one. Thanks for the advice.

  3. Oh no, you do seem to be having some trouble with them. I hope your remaining ones keep safe until you can harvest them.

    1. I hope so. During the rainy season, we have to work harder. High humidity make we get so many problems on gardening, especially pests and plant diseases.

  4. I don't know, very strange. It could be pollination related but it looked like seeds were formed.

    1. The little seeds were formed inside. I think the pollination was succes. I could mentioned the fruitset growth. When I was wrapping it, the size was more than 3 cm in diameter. And when it was fallen, the diameter more than 10 cm.

  5. I'm so sorry, and I'm not much help. My guess would be like Sue's - too wet. I think this is why I find vegetable gardening so challenging. I always have some vegetable that decides it doesn't like what I'm doing, and I'm at a loss as to what it is!

  6. What a shame! I'm thinking the same as Sue, could be the wet and humid weather. I hope you can pick the remaining ones.

  7. I have never grown pumpkins either vertically or as an arbor, so I am really not too sure what to do with heavy fruit. The net mesh idea sounds like worth a try. I had a gardener who put each flower in a little plastic bag with a twisty wrap. His worst enemy was change in temperature. Condensation caused the rot. Maybe you should punch holes in your plastic? 1. I will try on the next growing. Actually I make two holes on each plastic bags. Two wide holes each on the bottom side in order to have good aeration and to flow away the rain water that get inside the bags.

  8. Also agree with Sue...it's too wet, punch holes on the wrapping, or try using cloth next time.
