NOT FROM MY GARDEN : KENCI - WATERCRESS

Kenci or water cress (Nasturtium officinale) is a popular vegetable on tropical highland.
This vegetable is usually grown on the watery land, especially near the spring on the highland.
Here, this plant grows so healthy on the clean watery area.
The shallow slow-flowing water is the best place for it.
We can find lot of watercress on my hometown.
Cause, my hometown is on the highland which the weather is fairly cool and a lot of springs there.

There's no suitable part on my garden for this vegetable.
So, if I miss the taste of this vegetable, I should buy it on the traditional market.

Yea... this vegetable is so special for me.
It always reminds me to my mother, that often present Javanese salad 'Pecel' or clear soup from kenci.
The taste is so authentic.

We can find kenci on traditional market almost everyday.
They are bunched and tied using bamboo rope.
The price is not too expensive.

Actually, I want to try to grow it on my garden.
Farmers usually grow it by cutting.
Look the lower stem... we can find fresh roots on the nodes.
I think I can grow it, but I have to prepare fresh clean water everyday to support their growth.
It couldn't hurt to try something that's impossible.
Reader, have you ever planted watercress on your own garden?

  2. I grow watercress here in a pot of compost. As long as there is a bowl of water underneath the pot it grows well. Watercress likes it damp or wt. If you can find a shady spot perhaps it is worth giving it a try x

    1. Salam Honey,
Biasanya pucuk dan daun mudanya direbus sesaat, lalu disajikan dengan sambal kacang atau sambal kelapa.
