EDIBLE WEED : PART 5

KROKOT

This is  an old fashion weed on my garden.
Here, Krokot (Portulaca oleraceae) is also called gelang biasa.

Krokot is an annual plant that can grow to a height of 50 cm.
This plant is commonly used as a feed crop for livestock.
The stem is purplish red, plump shape and thickness.
The leaves are also thick and fleshy, and sulfur yellow flowers.

Krokot serve as the WHO list of priority medicinal plants in the world, and 23 countries have been using this plant.
In Javanese traditional medicine, the plant is often used to cure dysentery, strengthen the heart, is a sedative, laxative urine, and as a tonic.

Although this plant is commonly considered a weed, this plant is also eaten as a leavy vegetable.
This plant has a sour and salty taste.
Krokot can be cooked as cakes, soup, and stir-fry.

Krokot can be used as an insecticide, because it contains tannins, phosphates, contain large amounts of magnesium, iron, aluminum, manganese, calcium, potassium, sodium, and urea.
It's a nice plant..., isn't it?

    1. Yes, here the whole plant without its root usually steamed or boiled for a while then served with sambal kelapa (grated coconut). I have ever seen the beach portulaca, but only on pictures, I haven't ever seen the real plant yet. The leaf is wider and green- grey

    1. I think you can find this plant there. Your climate is almost similar to mine. Maybe you can find it on the farmland or on the country road side. Thank you for visiting and following.
