RED OKRA : FRESH PODS FOR THIS WEEK

My red okra look so happy this week.
I found some pods on the plants.
The red one look so striking on my shady garden.

I picked some big pods...

The hairy skin looks so velvety...

On the open area with full sun shine, the pod's skin has red color.

But on the shady area, the skin looks greenish.

Some pods have so unique shape.
The pods have 10 - 15 cm long.
And the diameter is about 2 - 2.5 cm

I should make a special dish from this pods.
It must be so interesting...

  1. I love okra! Your plants look healthy and vibrant. I'm actually growing them now, both red and green. I started them from seeds but they're still in the little pots and not on the raised beds yet. I will plant the okra soon, our weather is starting to warm up and the last frost date is in a few days. Do you know how much you can harvest from 1 plant, is it enough for 1 person? We're a family of 3. Some of my okra seedlings aren't doing so well. I hope they all survive when I transplant them in the raised beds!

    1. Wow, sounds great! I hope too, and I can see how beautiful your garden with okra's flowers blossom on your garden then bearing so plenty fruits on each plant.
Actually, this is the first time I planted okra both red and green. The green looks so poor, maybe they only get a linited sunshine and the soil is too heavy. I think the growth of my red okras do not optimum yet. I saw on some farms, the pods bear on every leaf axils. Each plant can produce more than 0.5 kg on the optimum condition. I hope you can reach that. Happy gardening!

    2. Thank you for responding. It has been so cold outside and I had my okra outdoor in small containers, I brought them in the house because they're looking sad. I'll bring them out when the weather warms up. I hope they survive and do well!

  2. They look great, you can grow them under cover here in the UK, if I had the space I would try them.

  3. I liked your red okra the last time you posted about it so I found some seed and planted it late yesterday. I have only planted the green variety, the package says it doesn't stay red when cooked. If yo let it get too large it will be tough, the small ones are best and I use them with other vegetables to thicken up the soup.

    1. Here, the green okra is more popular than the red one. The red variety is so rare here. I hope you could taste it sometime.

  5. I have not seen red okra either. Often here they serve okra breaded, which I don't care for, but I do like it in things like gumbo or soup.

    1. There are two varieties of okra, green and red. But the red variety is a minor vegetable. The taste is delicious, and crispy when it's still young. If we cook it too long, the chopped fruits will secrete mucilage

    1. If you have space already, you should sow it, and I would notice the growth, maybe yours be better than mine.
