DEWANDARU - PART 5

Dewandaru seed is high resinous content.
So, the seeds are considered toxic.

Dewandaru trees with colorful and aromatic fruits will attract birds and bats.
The birds and bats feed on the fruits, spreading the seeds and realizing the propagation of Dewandaru species.

Dewandaru seeds are the usual means of propagation.
They remain viable for not much longer than a month.

The seeds germinate in 3 to 4 weeks.

Sometime, the seed are thrown on the beds and grow as a volunteer.
Volunteer seedlings can be taken up and successfully transplanted.

Dewandaru seedlings grow slowly.
The seedling on the picture above is about a month and on the picture below is about six months old.
Plant from seedling usually begin to fruit when 2 years old.
In some case the plants delay fruiting for 5 or 7 years, or even 10 if in unfavorable situations.

Easy seedling but slow growing...

  1. I'd be a bit wary og eating the fruits if the seeds are toxic

    1. Actually the seeds and the flesh are separated. And the toxicity degree is low. So, it's safe to eat the flesh.

  2. It's amazing how nature ensures that species will thrive by making the fruit tempting to birds and bats so that they will spread the seed.

  3. So it takes some time from seed to tree, and you have to be lucky to be able to enjoy these beautiful colored looking fruits in two years.
