GARDENING ON THE BALCONY : MAY 2014

This is my east balcony, this morning...

Just a little progress here...
The red lettuces were already harvested, only five pots remain.

I still have green mustard, celery and kailan.

The new plant varieties this month is Andewi (Endive) and bitter gourd.

And the new row is ready to substitute the old row.
Look the packcoy 'Wazuka' row on the floor.

On the north side of the balcony, there is a pare (bitter gourd) vine.
It climbs and hangs on the canopy support.

Caterpillars, mealy bugs and thrips were really annoying.
Hope they will not make a 'disaster' on my balcony.

I hope my balcony will more productive.
I wish...

  1. Impressive with all the pots, I often say that when you introduce a plant in the garden you also introduce the pests that comes with it….! You just need to stay on top of it and deal with things as soon as you discover anything lurking around. And sometimes we find that certain types of plants are more resistant that others. The salad I grew last year was much more resistant to aphids than what I am growing this year so I have just ripped out my salad seedlings and I will be starting all over again with the same as I grew last year. This years’ salad was so covered in aphids that there was no way I would eat it!

Good luck with your plants – and good harvest!

    1. That's a good lesson. Multiple cropping and plant rotation are recommended way to keep our garden healthy and minimize the bug's attack.
Thank you Helene, have a great weekend!

  4. I'm always really impressed how many different fruits and vegetables you can grow in pots, it is amazing. Surprising for me is that you too can grow Endive in your warm climate.
